Nscale has raised $3.36 billion weeks before a planned stock market debut. The British company announced the financing on Friday. It comes as convertible notes, loans that turn into shares automatically when the company lists.
Nscale is a neocloud, a company that builds data centers full of Nvidia chips and rents the computing power to AI developers. It spun out of the Australian crypto mining firm Arkon Energy two years ago and is building large campuses in Norway and West Virginia.
Where the money comes from
The hedge fund Third Point led the round. Nvidia, already an investor, is putting in $1 billion, which arrives in mid-November. The remaining $2.36 billion is available now, according to the company.
Nscale filed paperwork for a New York Stock Exchange listing last week. TechCrunch reports it hopes to raise about $3 billion in the offering at a valuation of around $35 billion.
Why the size matters
A data center campus costs billions before it earns anything. Nscale says it has signed more than $103 billion in contracts since it spun out, and it needs cash to build the capacity those contracts promise.
Nvidia's role runs both ways. It sells the chips that fill Nscale's buildings and owns part of the company buying them.
